what do these homemade easy cinnamon rolls taste like?

This recipe is what my ideal cinnamon rolls would taste like: soft and light but sweet and sticky. Something filled with warm cinnamon and a delicious topping something really really comforting. So to get all that, I have included rich ingredients like butter, buttermilk and condensed milk.

What is the purpose of using buttermilk instead of milk?

Buttermilk contains more acid than regular milk, but this doesn’t make the rolls acidic, it only adds to the fluffiness and lightness of the overall texture of the roll.

What is the purpose of raising the dough “twice”?

If you think of it like marinating meat, the more you marinate, the better and more complex the flavours will be.

Are there any extra precautions I can take to make sure I don’t make mistakes that could ruin the homemade cinnamon rolls?

  • Always measure your ingredients properly. Too much flour can result in hard and dry cinnamon rolls, which is not what we want.
  • It is important that your butter is at room temperature when kneading and working the dough. If it is too cold, the ingredients will not mix properly. This can result in lumps of flour in your rolls.
  • Make sure you knead your dough well.  (https://www.thekitchn.com/bread-baking-tip-how-to-tell-w-156772) this link can help you know whether or not your dough has been kneaded well.
  • Make sure that your yeast hasn’t expired. Using yeast that’s been in the cabinet for too long can greatly affect your dough’s taste, texture, and structure.

  • 3 cups of all-purpose flour + more for kneading.
  • 1/2 tsp of salt
  • 1 cup of brown sugar
  • 15 g of  instant yeast
  • 1 & 1/2 cup  heated buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup of margarine
  • 1 tbsp vanilla essence

for the filling:

  • 2 tbsp of ground cinnamon powder
  • 3 tbsp of butter/margarine at room temperature

for the frosting:

  • 1/2 cup of condensed milk.

instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to the lowest temperature. This will help your dough to rise faster and better.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine your flour, yeast, salt and brown sugar. mix well to make sure everything is combined well.
  3. Add your heated buttermilk, margarine, vanilla essence and egg to a separate bowl and mix well.
  4. Pour your wet ingredients into your dry ingredients and mix well. Your dough will become hard to mix so place it on a floured surface and knead well. Keep adding LITTLE AMOUNTS of flour when your dough is too wet. You will end up putting roughly 1/2- 1 cup of flour after kneading. Your dough is ready when it is soft, doesn’t have lumps, is smooth and doesn’t stick to your hands as much.
  5.  SWITCH OFF THE OVEN THEN place your dough into your slightly heated oven in a bowl and allow it to rise for 45 min.
  6. Once your dough has risen place your dough onto a clean floured surface and roll it out into a long rectangle. Make sure that you don’t roll it out too thinly. It needs to be around 2cm thick.
  7. Spread your butter evenly around your rectangular dough. Then spread your cinnamon evenly on top of the butter.
  8. Roll your dough on the long side. then cut your rolls into about 13-15  pieces. (2-3 cm thick)
  9. Place your rolled dough evenly spaced out into a large baking tray, leaving space around each roll to help with raising. cover with a damp cloth and allow the dough to raise again for 40 minutes. Preheat your oven to 180 degrees celsius to bake.
  10. Once the dough has raised for 40 minutes bake your rolls for 15-20 minutes or until your rolls look slightly golden brown on top and a toothpick comes out clear.
  11. Remove your rolls from the oven then place your condensed milk on your rolls evenly and enjoy. ( you don’t have to use all the condensed milk, this is just a guideline.)
