These sweet plantain chips are a gift to humanity, it is an amazing and healthy treat that is so versatile to enjoy, making them a flexible treat that can be enjoyed as a snack or a side dish for jollof rice.
My first impressions:
Crispy, sweet and delicious were the first three words that came to mind when I bit into my first-ever fried sweet plantain chip. I was a bit sceptical about having banana chips as it was something that I associated with dessert. Still, my curiosity was far too significant to dismiss trying out fried plantain. It was a very different and distinct taste that I absolutely enjoyed. Since then, I have had sweet fried plantain chips at least once a month! This West African delicacy is something everyone should try out, it is so addicting!
A West African favourite
what do plantain chips taste like
As someone who did not grow up having plantains as a staple, I would compare it to the taste of a crispy fried sweet potato. Plantains have a delicious, starchy and sweet taste on the inside with the texture of a banana and potato combined.

Start off by peeling your plantain. Do this by cutting the edges of the plantain then make a slight incision on the skin of the plantain then gently remove the skin of the plantain.
Using a sharp knife, slice the plantains vertically into half-centimeter-thick slices. Try to make sure that all the pieces have the same thickness to ensure even cooking.
Heat up canola or sunflower oil, enough to deep fry, on medium heat. Then fry your plantain in the heated oil until it gets a crispy golden colour.
Do you need to soak plantains before frying?
No, plantain chips do not need to be soaked before frying. They perfectly cook to crispiness without soaking.
Place your fried plantain onto a paper towel to allow excess oil to drain. Enjoy, your favourite way!
